Salzburg, Austria

In the fall of 2019, we took a trip to Europe and did two of our favorite things:

    • Rode Trains
    • Ate Steak
The starting point was Italy, followed by Luzern, Switzerland, then on to Salzburg, Austria. The entire trip from Switzerland to Austria took about 6 hours. We left with the morning commuters, traveled through picturesque countryside including through Liechtenstein, and arrived to Salzburg in time for lunch.

We were celebrating for this leg of our trip so we splurged and booked a room at the historic Hotel Goldener Hirsch. The location of the hotel is in Salzburg's Old Town. Most of the area is pedestrian traffic only. After wading through droves of tourists, we found the entrance. Walking into the hotel gives you a feel of walking back in time, but keeping amenities. Although this was our first trip to Salzburg, the staff was as inviting and friendly as one would expect after multiple visits. After the chaotic atmosphere outside, it felt like we were given a blanket and welcomed to cozy up the fire as soon as we checked in.

After settling into our room, that exceeded expectations, we took the short walk downstairs to the bar for a drink and make a plan for dinner.

The historic Restaurant Herzl has been serving traditional fare since the 15th century and seemed the obvious choice for our first night.

The following day, we enjoyed exploring the town, seeing the sights, enjoying beers at various bars and shopping. We stopped for a midday snack of carpaccio and drinks at Pizzeria Sabroson, Linzer G. 27, 5020 Salzburg, Austria.

That evening we planned to have dinner at a fancy-ish place that is now closed. The service was so bad we left, so the closing is really no surprise. We walked until we found Blaue Gans that had a friendly atmosphere.
