I could write all day about Rio. The people, the beaches, the flavor. This is a steak blog though, and thankfully there is plenty of that in Rio too.
Maurício is from Rio, a true carioca — we've covered a lot of ground in the past 12 years but there's one neighborhood he always takes me back to: Urca. It's tucked away from the tourist chaos of Copacabana and Ipanema. Quiet, safe, residential. You see families out for dinner and kids walking home from school in the afternoon.
"The pace of life becomes contagious."
Urca
Garota da Urca · Urca, Rio de Janeiro
Garota da Urca is a restaurant that feels like our living room at this point. Tourists go there for pizza, but we go for the picanha carioca — a Brazilian-style steak cooked on a gas-powered flat iron brought to your table.
Flamengo
Cafe Lamas · Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro
For a meal in a location steeped in history but off the hot streets of Rio, head to Flamengo and straight to Cafe Lamas. Inside a restaurant established 150 years ago, food is served family style — huge portions, a variety of sides, and plenty of buzz. Believe me, a lot of Brazilians wish those walls could talk.
Copacabana
Cervantes Restaurantes · Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro · 2026
On a recent trip to Rio in 2026, we made a point of returning to Cervantes Restaurantes in Copacabana. This was the first restaurant he introduced me to back in 2014. The steak sandwich was even better than I remembered.
Botafogo
Cruzeiro do Sul Churrascaria · Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro
If you want the true Brazilian Barbecue experience, skip the flashy pricey churrascarias (Fogo de Chão, for example). Cruzeiro do Sul Churrascaria in Botafogo is the place. It's where the locals go for a fraction of the price.
