Tacos Locos - San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

This is the actual map we were given with our rental.
When we were first starting our adventures as a couple, we decided to take a last minute trip to Nicaragua for a long weekend. We ended up in San Juan del Sur which is more than two hours from Managua. To say this place was off the beaten path is an understatement. The raw beauty of the area takes your breath away. The openness and hospitality of the people is something unique and a treasured experience.

This is a place surfers drive for days to reach. There were lots of camps of Vanagons and the like sprinkled through the woods. The waves are impressive, at least for a non-surfer. We had hours of enjoyment watching the real surfers ride the waves over and over.

Tucked into a piece of rain forest that leads to Playa Maderas is a little taco place called Tacos Locos. The amazing thing about Tacos Locos is that it is so remote, you have to have a reason to be there. That makes it feel exclusive. Everyone working there is laid back and down to earth and makes you feel like you are having a meal in good friend's back yard. We pretty much ate lunch there every day.The steak tacos were fantastic with fresh local vegetables and locally made tortillas. The beer was some ridiculous price like $2 - so we drank it all! We have wanted to get back down to San Juan del Sur and stay at the Mango Rosa Resort for a few years now.  I highly recommend them for accommodations. They also have an amazing kitchen. Once the political climate settles down, I hope we have a chance to go back.
